Last updated: 16 Oct 2026

Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia's capital and the centre of the Klang Valley. Around the city centre of KLCC, Bukit Bintang and Brickfields are very different neighbourhoods, from expat-friendly Mont Kiara and Dutamas to family areas such as Wangsa Maju, Setiawangsa and Taman Melawati, and value-for-money pockets along Old Klang Road and Sungai Besi. With the densest rail network in the country, KL suits almost everyone, as long as you pick the right neighbourhood for your budget and commute.

Getting around

KL has the best public transport in Malaysia. Two MRT lines (Kajang and Putrajaya), three LRT lines (Kelana Jaya, Ampang and Sri Petaling), the KL Monorail and KTM Komuter all run through the city, with KL Sentral as the main hub and the ERL from there to KLIA.

For drivers, MRR2 rings the city, DUKE, SMART and the Federal Highway lead into the centre, and MEX heads south to Putrajaya and the airport. Traffic in the centre is heavy, so living near a station makes a big difference.
